Example: a 5" x 7" would have a bleed size of 5.1" x 7.1" and a 8.5"x11" flyer would have a bleed size of 8.625"x11.125". downloadable templates? What's a bleed? It is the portion of the card that will be trimmed off when cut to the final size. Why bleed? The purpose of a bleed is to continue a color, image or design to the edge of the card.

Please build your press-ready digital files by adding crop marks.Lines indicating where the paper should be cut to produce the correct size.

All critical elements (text, images, logos, etc.) must be kept at least 0.125" inside the edge. Anything left close to edge may be cut off during trimming.

Please allow 1/16" cutting tolerance around your card. We recommend no borders due to shifting in the cutting process, borders may appear uneven.

Printing knowledge

Paper should be addressed first in your design work. With postcards, the best option is to choose a thicker cardstock instead of a thinner text weight. The difference between these 2 types of paper is thickness.

We have many coating options. Matte, UV, silk and spot UV. Choose the coating based on your application. For example, if you want to write on your cards with a pen, do not choose UV coating as a pen won’t write on it. In this case a matte or uncoated stock coating would suit. Choose UV coating for flyers or banners and our rich silk gives a touch of elegance; 16pt stock a more durable feeling.

We might not have the same fonts on our systems as your computer, so when saving your files in a vector based program (Illustrator, InDesign, Quark, CorelDraw) please outline your fonts. This will convert them to a vector image, will not effect the clarity and will allow us to see the same text as you see on your screen.

Large black areas or fonts bigger than 36 points should use Rich Black which stops areas appearing gray. Rich Black is created with 30% Cyan, 30% Magenta, 30% Yellow, 100% Black. This setup will keep black areas looking rich and bold. For best results with regular body text, do not use Rich Black.

CMYK stands for Cyan, Magenta, Yellow and Black. Printing with these four colors is often referred to as full color or 4-color printing. CMYK are subtractive colors.  Any file that is printed on a printing press must be converted to CMYK.
In offset printing, the standard color mode used in CMYK. CMYK, or Cyan, Magenta, Yellow & Black represent the four process colours in this mode. When you are creating your files, be sure to check the color mode as programs like Photoshop by default use RBG color, not CMYK. CMYK may look more dull on a computer screen than RGB; more noticeable in large solid color areas.

RGB stands for Red, Green and Blue. These colors are used for digital cameras, scanners, computer monitors and T.V. screens. Files must be converted from RGB to CMYK if printing on a printing press

Gamut is converting between the CMYK and RGB color space can cause a shift in color. This is because each color format only produces a selective gamut of the full spectrum of color. The color range of each format, however, differs. There are areas in the RGB color space that extend beyond the CMYK range. Those colors will be affected by a conversion from RGB to CMYK.

One important custom printing term to know is a bleed. Bleed refers to an extra 1/8" of image that extends beyond the trim area of your printing piece. The project is printed on an oversized sheet that is cut down to size with the appearance that the image "bleeds" off the edge of the paper.

Cutting of your printing piece is done in large stacks and may vary from the top and the bottom of the stack. The safe area or inner margin in which to keep all important elements within to prevent them from trimming off, should be at least 1/8" inside the edge of the final trim size.

A folded mock-up layout includes fold line indicators to assist you in the correct panel layout, page direction, and size for multi-page documents. Folding a sheet of paper once produces 4 pages, and each additional fold doubles the number of pages.

Trim marks: Indicate where to trim the printed sheet or where the edge of the paper is. Similar to register or crop marks.

The final size of the document after the last trim is made.
